What Happened?

Shares of mediterranean fast-casual restaurant chain CAVA (NYSE:CAVA) jumped 12.8% in the afternoon session after the company reported second-quarter results that beat analyst estimates for revenue and earnings, driven by strong sales growth. The Mediterranean fast-casual chain's revenue climbed 31.3% year-over-year to $368.4 million, surpassing the consensus estimate of $359.7 million.

A key factor in the beat was a 9% increase in same-restaurant sales, which outpaced expectations. The company also posted diluted earnings per share of $0.19, edging out projections of $0.18. However, the company's full-year guidance for adjusted EBITDA came in at $186 million at the midpoint, slightly below Wall Street's forecast of $190.6 million. Investors seemingly focused on the strong current performance, which caught some short-sellers by surprise and contributed to the stock's upward movement.

What Is The Market Telling Us

CAVA’s shares are very volatile and have had 27 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for CAVA and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 28 days ago when the stock gained 6.1% on the news that Morgan Stanley upgraded the Mediterranean fast-casual chain to Overweight from Equalweight, and raised its price target to $90. The bank cited strong fundamentals, including rising customer traffic, rapid unit growth, solid performance from new locations, and improved visibility into profit margins.

The move represented a significant shift in stance from the prominent Wall Street firm, signaling growing conviction in the company's growth story. The rally was also supported by a broader market upswing after better-than-expected inflation data, with the U.S. consumer price index falling in June.

CAVA is up 14.3% since the beginning of the year, but at $69.20 per share, it is still trading 28.9% below its 52-week high of $97.39 from April 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of CAVA’s shares at the IPO in June 2023 would now be looking at an investment worth $1,581.
