ISN® Introduces Energy-Based Safety Trainings Through Partnership with Safety Function

Safety Function’s leading-edge courses are exclusively available to ISN contractor customers to help identify and mitigate energy-based hazards

ISN, the global leader in contractor and supplier information management services, announced its partnership with Safety Function, a leader in evidence-based safety, led by Dr. Matthew Hallowell. Through this partnership, ISN contractor customers gain exclusive, unlimited access to 10 Safety Function training courses within the ISNetworld® Learning Management System (LMS) platform at no additional fee. Available courses include the Energy Wheel, High-Energy Hazards and Direct Controls, and High-Energy Control Assessments (HECA®).

“We continue to see Hiring Clients and contractors actively working to implement processes and trainings such as the Energy Wheel and HECA to help reduce the likelihood of a serious injury or fatality (SIF),” said Marie Anderson, Chief Customer Success Officer and Head of Review and Verification Services (RAVS®) at ISN. “We are proud to bring ISN contractor customers exclusive access to Safety Function’s courses to help improve energy-based hazard recognition, assess potential injury severity, and evaluate the adequacy of controls for workers on a jobsite. This partnership enhances our commitment to providing contractors with industry-leading training and resources to uphold the highest standards for worker safety.”

Safety Function’s initial training, based on Dr. Hallowell’s extensive research on energy-based safety, begins with the Energy Wheel, where 10 energy sources have been identified as potential sources of injuries. In addition to the Energy Wheel, ISN contractor customers have access to nine science-backed courses as part of a SIF-reduction framework to learn and apply essential skills such as identifying and controlling energy-based hazards, conducting effective pre-job safety briefings, and facilitating critical conversations.

“Although hazard recognition is foundational to nearly every safety activity, research shows more than half of all serious hazards are overlooked during work planning,” said Dr. Hallowell, Chief Executive Officer of Safety Function. “Safety Function’s curriculum equips crews with the skills to identify hazards more completely, prioritize hazards with SIF potential, and mitigate them with direct controls. Integrating energy-based safety into existing programs adds a focused, evidence-based approach to SIF prevention.”

“Training the workforce to identify and mitigate high-energy hazards is a critical step in improving the safety culture of any company,” said Anthony Knaapen II, Director of Enterprise Contractor Safety at PG&E. “The partnership between ISN and Dr. Matt Hallowell’s Safety Function team helps empower organizations to make this mindset a reality and employees make it home safely at the end of each day.”

Contractor workers can complete training through the ISNetworld LMS platform or ISN’s mobile app, Empower®. With more than 700 training courses available and 225,000 total courses completed in 2024, the ISNetworld LMS platform helps drive widespread engagement and positive impact in workplace safety training across industries.

About Safety Function

Safety Function is a small group of safety scientists who translate the latest safety research into practical interventions with the goal to eliminate SIFs. The scientists’ work is grounded in published research and industry collaboration, rigorously peer-reviewed before being made available to the industry. When it comes to safety, Safety Function believes workers deserve the highest standards and 'good ideas' are simply not enough. Safety Function’s position is safety beliefs are hypotheses to be tested, not truths to be guarded.
